Each year, the Polar Express makes its way to each of the schools in the Roosevelt School District to delight the children and their families during the holiday season.
But what is the Polar Express?
The Polar Express is a retrofitted school bus that the transportation employees of the district have converted into a holiday train, complete with choo choo train sound effects. All of the lights, ornaments, garland and accessories on the bus are possible because of the efforts of the employees to donate their time and money to make the Polar Express a reality.
“This is a great way for the transportation employees to give back to the community,” said Superintendent Jacqueline Jackson, Ed.D. “I am very proud of their efforts and it shows how much our employees care about the children and their families.”
Each year, the Polar Express is entered into the APS Electric Light Parade. This year, the entry came in second place in the Government category, although in the last two years, it has taken the first place trophy.
The effort is definitely a labor of love for the transportation employees, who in turn, convert the bus into the Freedom Train for the Martin Luther King Jr. parade in the district and the Si Se Puede bus for the Cesar Chavez parade in March.
It is just one way in which the Roosevelt School District Transportation Department, including its drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and other department personnel, are contributing their talents and resources to make the holidays just a little brighter for the South Mountain Community.
