Peoria board approves new principal

Peoria Unified School District’s Governing Board appointed Mrs. Rae Conelley as the principal who will open Sunset Heights Elementary School in August 2014. Sunset Heights is the district’s 33rd elementary school which is currently being built near Lake Pleasant Road and Deer Valley Parkway.

Conelley has been an educator for 28 years and has served as the principal of Frontier Elementary School, within the Peoria Unified School District, for the past four years. Conelley started her career in Peoria Unified as an eighth-grade Language Arts teacher at Alta Loma Elementary School.

In 1998, she became a Curriculum Specialist, which is where she remained until 2001 when she was promoted to Assistant Principal at Alta Loma. In 2005, Conelley was promoted to principal at Alta Loma Elementary. In the 2010-11 school year, Conelley then transferred as principal to Frontier Elementary School.

In 1996, Conelley successfully completed her Masters in Elementary Education from Arizona State University. She completed her principal’s certification requirements in 2000.

The Peoria Unified School District, located in the West Valley, serves more than 36,000 students in 32 elementary schools, seven high schools and one non-traditional high school. With ongoing open enrollment opportunities, the district boasts a 94 percent high school graduation rate.

Peoria Unified is one of the largest unified school districts in Arizona and prides itself on excelling schools, award-winning teachers, high AIMS test scores, specialized signature programs and championship sports programs.
