The Arizona Spelling Bee Champion, Omkar Bharath, will represent Arizona in the 92nd Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26th-31st.

Omkar is 11 years old and attends Desert Canyon Middle School in the Scottsdale Unified School District. This year was his first time competing in the state spelling bee where he out-spelled 26 other competitors, winning the bee with the word “breviary.”

Omkar and his parents will be traveling to the Scripps National Spelling Bee courtesy of the Arizona Educational Foundation.

The competition takes place May 26-31 in the Maryland Ballroom at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland 11 miles outside of Washington D.C.

Admission to the Bee is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Arizona Educational Foundation celebrates excellence in education, and while some programs focus on outstanding teachers or entire schools, the Arizona Spelling Bee is a great opportunity to showcase the hard work of individual students.” said Arizona Educational Foundation Director of Programs and Partnerships Dan Allen.

“Omkar faced off with the best spellers from across the state to win the title of Arizona Spelling Bee Champion, and we know that he will make us proud,” Allen said.
