New Student Board Member

The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Governing Board has named Mesa Community College Student Julissa Muñoz as the 2020-21 Student Governing Board Member.

“I am very pleased to announce Julissa as our next Student Governing Board Member,” said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, Interim Chancellor. “She is drawn to lead and dedicated to advocating for our students. We’re excited to have her in this role, helping shape the student experience and the future of education.”

Muñoz is selected to serve as the second Student Governing Board Member, a non-voting position. She will be able to participate in all governing board meetings, speak on behalf of student priorities, and provide comprehensive input from students on community college issues.

“I am beyond excited to continue advocating for all Maricopa Community College students as the next Student Governing Board member,” said Julissa Munoz. “I am here to ensure that the student voice is heard. Students pay for their own tuition whether it is out of pocket, with scholarships, or any other financial assistance; this is their education and future. It is important to make sure student voices are heard.”

Muñoz has been attending Mesa Community College (MCC) since the Spring of 2019. She is currently a part of the Honors Program, Psi Beta- the National Psychology Honors Society, and works as an intern for Institutional Advancement at MCC. She is also a part of the new Maricopa Community College Student Senate where she runs meetings as the President. She most recently campaigned to be the 2020 MCC student body president.

Previously, Muñoz was a Glendale High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC Officer, training and guiding junior cadets, as well as a member of Glendale High School’s Student Council, organizing various events and advocating for students.

Muñoz will replace Ms. Alejandra Maya from Glendale Community College, who served as the inaugural student member of the board during the 2019-20 academic year.

The policy on the appointment of the student governing board member is available here.
