Maryvale High School and football coach George Martinez was presented with the Matt O. Hanhila Sportsmanship Award for the Division I Football season.
Martinez and athletic director Consuelo Nava received the award at halftime of the Division I Championship game, November 30 at University of Phoenix Stadium.
The award is presented by the Arizona Football Officials Association based on players’ and coaches’ conduct on the field and the sportsmanship they display.
Officials are asked to evaluate each team on how they were greeted, the condition of the dressing facilities, security, and if there were any unsportsmanlike penalties or ejections.
Martinez was in his first year as coach of the Maryvale High School Panthers.
The award is named after Dr. Hanhila, who has ties to Phoenix Union. Hanila was the first principal of both South Mountain (1953-57) and Carl Hayden (1957-63) High Schools.
