Who: Kevin Powell and Phoenix College
What: Powell will speak on the topic, “I Like It: Young America, Hip-Hop, and the Power of Voting and Being Woke.” There will be a Q&A, followed by both a voter registration and book signing opportunity.
When: Wednesday, August 29, 2018, 6 – 8 p.m.

Kevin Powell speaks in a lecture circuit, both nationally and internationally, on education, civic engagement, effective leadership, health and wellness, and job creation. He is a contributor to a wide range of newspapers and magazines and major websites, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR, ESPN, Essence, Ebony, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Vibe, where he was a senior writer and founding staff member.

About Kevin Powell
Kevin Powell is an acclaimed political, cultural, literary and hip-hop voice in America today. The product of a single mother, absent father, horrific poverty, and violence, he was able to study at Rutgers University in his home state of New Jersey due to a program created by the Civil Rights Movement. Kevin has gone on to be a writer who has penned articles, essays, and blogs for a wide range of newspapers and magazines and major websites, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR, ESPN, Essence, Ebony, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Vibe, where he was a senior writer and founding staff member. Kevin is the author of 13 books, including his critically acclaimed autobiography, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood, which is being adapted for the screen. His 14th book will be a biography of Tupac Shakur, whom Kevin interviewed many times while working for Vibe. Kevin is also a co-founder of BK Nation, a new American organization, and website focused on civil and human rights and equal opportunity for all people.
