Two Kyrene School District COVID-19 vaccination events helped immunize hundreds of children and adults. Kyrene partnered with Albertsons/Safeway on events in December and January, offering first and second dose shots as well as boosters. The weekend events were held on the Kyrene de las Manitas Elementary School campus in Tempe.
“From being the first Arizona district to offer onsite testing exclusively for our Kyrene employees to this winter’s vaccine events for children as young as five, it has been our commitment to do everything in our power to support the health and safety of our community,” said Superintendent Laura Toenjes. “Healthy communities mean healthy students and staff, so our schools can remain open and continue to provide the excellence in education that Kyrene is known for.”
- December 18: 458 people vaccinated, including 330 children under age 12.
- January 8: 486 people vaccinated, including 292 children under age 12.
Vaccines administered across both events included Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, and a few people even got their flu shot while they were there.
“These events demonstrate the importance of school-community connections,” said Damian Nichols, Executive Director of Emergency Management. “The Albertsons/Safeway team did an outstanding job, and both events went very smoothly. We would not hesitate to work with them again.”
Kyrene employees volunteered to help staff the event, adding to the smooth operations and ensuring hundreds of families and individuals moved quickly through the process without crowding or backups.
