Helios Education Foundation is pleased to share this video highlight from a recent gathering entitled Arizona’s Economic Imperative: Ensuring Latino Student Success, featuring Dr. Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University.
At Helios Education Foundation, we believe that every student, regardless of zip code, deserves a high quality education, and especially those students from under-served and under-represented populations.
Yet, Latino student graduation rates trail that of their White peers.
According to Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, by 2020 65 percent of all jobs in the economy will require some form of postsecondary education and training beyond high school.
Arizona’s coming demographic shift combined with alarming student achievement gaps and low postsecondary degree attainment rates make Latino student success an economic imperative for Arizona.
Dr. Crow’s presentation sheds light on the severity of Arizona’s current trajectory and calls for a dramatic course correction before our state finds itself out of sync with the country’s economy.
Arizona has the opportunity to lead the nation in solving this issue and our combined efforts can serve as a blueprint for other states.
This is not just an education issue, but an economic one that will require engagement and commitment from the business, education, philanthropic and other sectors of the community.
I encourage you to watch the video in its entirety and to refer to Dr. Crow’s full presentation for additional insights. In addition, you can visit us at www.helios.org for more information.
