Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Phoenix IDA and Arizona Community Foundation, an existing classroom at Cholla Middle School will be transformed into an innovative Makerspace for students, teachers and families to create and expand their imaginations through active learning. The lab will open next month.

A Makerspace is a cutting-edge, collaborative learning environment where students come together to share materials and learn new skills.

The Cholla Makerspace will provide flexible, large work areas and a diverse array of tools and materials that involve arts, crafts, engineering and technology that will enhance the STEAM disciplines of curiosity, inquiry, creativity, exploration, collaboration, critical thinking and real-world problem solving.

More than 500 Cholla students will have opportunities to work in this exciting lab through a rotating schedule during the school day, after school during the Academy program and in the evenings through family and community events.

It’s a STEAM Revolution in WESD and we hope this is the first of many Makerspaces!
