Juan Felipe Herrera

U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera will visit Davis Bilingual Elementary Magnet School on Friday, March 10, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Mr. Herrera will address the student body and will distribute free copies of his books, courtesy of the University of Arizona Poetry Center.

Mr. Herrera, the son of migrant farm workers, was named U.S. Poet Laureate in 2015-2016. His childhood experiences are reflected in his work, which includes poetry, short stories, picture books and novels.  His children’s book, “Calling the Doves,” won the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award in 1997.

Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild will also visit the school. He said Mr. Herrera has exactly the qualifications the country would want in a poet laureate.

“His poetry is highly regarded. He’s written for and worked with children and young people. And, his background as the child of migrant farm workers puts him among those whose voices are less often heard in literature,” Rothschild said. “I’m so pleased that he could visit with and inspire the students at Davis Elementary.”

Davis Bilingual Elementary Magnet School is located at 500 W St Mary’s Rd, Tucson, AZ 85701
