The 2014 Coconino County Teacher of the Year Award Ceremony May 1st was a great event. Several Flagstaff Unified School District teachers were honored including 2013 -2014 STEM Teacher of the Year, Christine Sapio (CHS), Rodel Exemplary Teachers, Chris Hull (MEMS) and Veronica Villegas (SMS) and the SEDI TASC (Teacher Awards for Sustainable Curriculum) Award Teacher Awards for Sustainable Curriculum.
Four prizes of $2,500 each were awarded for a total of $10,000! The purpose of these awards is to recognize development and implementation of innovative educational approaches that instill in students the importance, value and practicality of local environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability.
The awards were granted to teachers for the development and implementation of lessons, units or projects that reflect and reinforce the three principles of sustainability: social equity, economic prosperity, and ecological health. The lesson, unit or projects had a clear connection to the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability as reflected by the guiding principles of SEDI. The awards were based on innovative approaches, actions taken, and outcomes that demonstrated practical application at the local level.
This year’s winners are; Joy Bergeron (DeMiguel) Kristie Kay (Knoles), Josh Armstrong (MEMS), and Jeff Taylor (FHS).
The 2014 Coconino County Teacher of the Year is Jeff Taylor (AP Science FHS). In addition to a cash award and a 1 year loan of a car from Findlay Toyota, Mr. Taylor will now be a nominee for the Arizona State Teacher of the Year!
FUSD would also like to congratulate Patti Pastor (FHS) and Jennifer Hamilton (CHS) who were finalists for the 2014 Coconino County Teacher of the Year Award.
