An early literacy program in the Tempe Elementary School District and a hospital-based school are the latest examples of excellence in Arizona education to be highlighted as part of the Expect More Excellence Tour.
Receiving this month’s Judge’s Pick spotlight is Experience Corps, a program which engages retired community members to improve K-3 student literacy in disadvantaged schools in the Tempe Elementary School District.
The retirees serve as tutors and mentors and are meeting a great need for additional support in the schools. The program taps into the experience and passion of retired community members to ensure that every child has a chance to succeed in school and in life.
Phoenix Children’s founded 1 Darn Cool School to help patients maintain their education during prolonged hospital stays and re-enter successfully into their own school program once they get better and can go home.
Expect More Arizona, a nonprofit education advocacy organization, created the Expect More Excellence Tour to shine a light on what Arizonans are doing all over the state to make progress toward a world-class education. Highlighting examples of excellence statewide supports Expect More Arizona’s efforts to create a high-expectations culture, where schools and educators are celebrated and supported, and students achieve great results.
“Students in Arizona need to be prepared to succeed in today’s global economy, and that requires a world-class education,” said Pearl Chang Esau, Expect More Arizona’s President and CEO. “Countless students, educators, parents and communities are already working to raise the bar to that world-class level, and this initiative is a way to both recognize their commitment and inspire excellence for all Arizona students.”
The Expect More Excellence Tour celebrates the kind of education Arizonans should expect and believe must be available to all students. The goal is to unite communities across the state in the commitment to make world-class education for all a reality.
The Expect More Excellence Tour continues to accept submissions online at ExpectMoreArizona.org. A People’s Choice spotlight and a Judge’s Pick spotlight will be selected each month.
The People’s Choice spotlight is determined by the number of online votes on the last day of each month. The Judge’s Pick is given to those submissions that best reflect alignment to one or more of the Five Building Blocks of World-Class Education, as well as the impact of the work.
Submissions require completion of a short online form accompanied by a photo or short video that best represents the program or person being nominated. Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and video quality will not be judged. Videos can be taken with a mobile device, flip cam, iPad, etc.
