EVIT hosts East Valley High School Automotive Skills Challenge
Aspiring high school auto technicians are competing for a chance to earn over $5,500 in prizes at the East Valley High School Automotive Skills Challenge on Saturday, March 26 at the East Valley Institute of Technology.
The event is free to the public, with activities starting at 9 a.m. at the EVIT Main Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa.
The top 64 automotive students from EVIT and automotive programs in East Valley high schools will take part in the hands-on competition featuring stations where students’ skills in electrical, diagnostics and more will be put to the test.
“This contest is a great way to provide every available opportunity for all (not just EVIT) East Valley students to test their skills and ensure that the needs of the industry are met,” said EVIT automotive instructor Ricardo Mota. “Many repair shops are willing to invest time and money in preparing the next generation of automobile repair technicians.”
EVIT’s automotive instructors have been working with industry advisors to organize the event. Dealerships and other automotive businesses from across the Valley are co-sponsoring the competition and have donated over $5,500 in prizes for students competing in the skills challenge.
In addition to the skills competition, the event will include a Pinewood Derby in which students are building their own miniature cars from wood. Over 100 cars will compete in the derby race.
Spectators can also check out the Ultimate Impression Car and Truck Show, raffles and prizes, and food trucks. TechForce Foundation, a national 501(c)3 nonprofit promoting professional technician careers, will also be at the event with its Mobile STEM Career Center, which offers hands-on activities to help students learn more about careers in the transportation industry.
Automotive Technologies is one of over 40 career training programs EVIT offers for high school students and adults in the East Valley. As a Career Technical Education District, EVIT also provides funding for automotive training and other career and technical education programs in East Valley high schools.
