Dr. Gail Pletnick testified before the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee on Thursday, July 14th, about the the importance of keeping the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) local.
Pletnick’s testimony is in response to the United States Department of Education rulemaking process.
“People buy into that which they have a hand in crafting,” says Pletnick. “Having input from parents, students, community members, teachers, support staff, administrators, and business and civic leaders will ensure building understanding and the buy-in needed to successfully implement ESSA at the state and local levels.”
ESSA was carefully crafted and enacted in 2015 to allow for greater state and local flexibility. Dr. Pletnick is concerned that unnecessarily rigid regulations will hinder state and local innovations.
