Last year Deb Weigel, principal of Desert View Academy, challenged her students to raise $12,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program. Her promise was to kiss a pig if the goal was met.

The school raised $12,583 and Mrs. Weigel kissed a pig at the school assembly where a check was presented to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Desert View Academy was their “Top Fundraising School” in Arizona for the second year in a row.

This year Mrs. Weigel challenged her students to raise $13,000. Her promise was to shave her head, if the goal was met. The school’s Pennies for Patients total rang in at $13,935.24!

A school assembly took place on Thursday, March 13th, at 9:00 AM, on the Desert View Academy basketball courts. At that time a check was presented to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the grand total collected and Mrs. Weigel had her head shaved.

Shaving her head was meant to be a show of solidarity with those who lose their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. This is a personal statement for Deb, whose younger sister is undergoing treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer.
