Cross country champions who inspired movie visit Cartwright School District

The Diaz Brothers, runners who inspired the movie McFarland USA, will be visiting Atkinson Middle School tomorrow afternoon. They will be giving pointers to cross country runners at the school and also offering inspiration to continue their education – beyond middle school and high school.
According to a 2013 census report, only 4.5% of Maryvale area students go on to purse a degree in college.
The Cartwright School District believes it is critical to reach students at the elementary and middle school ages in order to increase those numbers.
Exposing students to champions like the Diaz brothers, who went on to college, can help turn those statistics around.
The Diaz brothers will also be the keynote speakers at Cartwright’s 8th grade kickoff Wednesday, August 26th at Grand Canyon University Arena at 9:30am.
“McFarland, USA,” starring Kevin Costner, won the prestigious Latin Imagen award for best picture this year.
