S.D. does better than most states in retaining young teachers

National Education Association surveys long have shown that up to 50 percent of U.S. teachers quit within their first five years after earning their degrees, many because of low pay or poor working conditions. That trend doesn’t seem to follow in South Dakota, where data show that almost 75 percent of public university education majors who go to work in this state’s school districts still are there five years later.
