As fewer make grade to join military, some see early education as a solution

Retired Army Lieutenant General Dennis Benchoff believes the military’s most powerful tool today is still its people. They need to be able to comprehend complex instructions, think quickly on their feet, master complicated computer software and possess keen communication and social skills. Those qualities, however, are getting harder to find in candidates for military service. A new national report finds that three out of four young adults between the ages of 17 and 24 don’t qualify, primarily because they are poorly educated, physically unfit or have criminal records.
