Arizona Science Center Announces Inaugural Recipient of New Women in STEM Scholarship

Arizona Science Center is pleased to award its first-ever Chevy Humphrey Women in STEM Scholarship to Alicia De Jesus Armenta, a 2021 graduate of Metro Tech High School in Phoenix. The Science Center announced the formation of this new scholarship December 2020, in recognition of Chevy’s service to the organization and tenure as CEO and President from 2005-2020. The Science Center will select a recipient on an annual basis for the next 10 years.  

As the winner, Alicia will receive $2,000, funded by the Helios Education Foundation, which can be used towards tuition, books or room and board at any Arizona institution of higher education. Along with the cash award, Alicia will receive one year of mentoring services from College Success Arizona.

She will study Biomedical Sciences at Arizona State University and has goals of becoming an oncologist. Alicia became interested in this field after caring for her grandmother. 

“Alicia’s determination and spirit is the true embodiment of our vision for the Chevy Humphrey Women in STEM Scholarship,” said Mary K. Martuscelli, Arizona Science Center’s Board of Trustees Chair. “This scholarship serves as an important step in Arizona Science Center’s ongoing efforts of encouraging young women to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.”

This scholarship is particularly important as women make up a little more than one-fourth of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math. The gender gap is particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid tech fields.
