On October 19, the APS Women in Search of Excellence (WISE) employee networking group hosted 92 high school students and 17 teachers for 2018 Career Day.

The event, held at the APS Deer Valley Center, gave the students hands-on experience with career opportunities in the energy industry, exploring multiple career paths, both through the trades and college tracks.

Students came from Ironwood High School, MET Professional Academy, Desert Edge High School, Copper Canyon High School, Gila Bend High School, JAG Works West Valley, LaJoya Community High School, Ombudsman Metro, Paradise Valley High School, Peoria High School, Sierra Linda High School, Tempe High School, and Tolleson High School, to participate in the annual day-long event.

The schedule included a presentation about protecting our wildlife with Liberty Wildlife and an APS Forestry-Avian Programs representative; an electrical safety trailer demonstration from IBEW Local 387 that showcased what happens when something touches a live power line, as evidenced by an exploding hot dog;  and a Transmission and Distribution engineering hands on activity that let the students experience how energy is delivered to homes to power daily activities.

Speakers from several business units within APS gave presentations about STEM career paths in the utility industry, with approximately 70 APS employees volunteering for the event.
