Alhambra student named runner up State Chess Champion

  • |

Alhambra High School student Khanh Phan was the runner-up State Chess Champion at the Individual Championships, November 15-16 at Tempe High.

Phan had six grueling rounds, and in an exciting finish, he narrowly missed first place in a flurry of moves in the final seconds of the last round.

Phan’s brother won the state title two years ago.

Eddie Wendler was also a medal winner with an 11th place.

In the Alternate section, Josh Yazzie took 8th place and Anh Tran took 15th.

Jazmin Herrada won the biggest upset medal defeating an opponent rated 180 points higher than her.

Barry Wilder coaches the Alhambra Lions, who also finished second in the state in the Team Championships earlier this month.
