Sixteen members of the Alhambra Chess team competed with 309 teams from 32 different states at the National Championships in San Diego, April 4-5.

There are different sections based on rating which the players have earned through previous competitions.

Khanh Phan took 1st place for his rating class in Blitz.  Blitz is a speed chess event with a time control of five minutes per player.  If you run out of time you lose.  He was also 3rd in the U1600 class.

Andrew Jimenez took 10th place overall in the Unrated section.

Eddie Wendler took 1st place in the 1400 class, Esmeralda Jimenez took the 3rd place in the 1000 class and Phung Tran took 1st in the Unrated class.

For the team the Lions won 5th place in the Unrated division, 22nd place U800, 17th place U1200, 28th place in the Open championship, and 11th place in Blitz.

The Lions were state runners-up in Arizona last fall, and Khanh Phan finished second to the individual state champion.
