South Mountain Community College recently received an award by The American Association of Community Colleges for their Safety, Leadership, and Planning initiatives. AACC honored SMCC at their Awards of Excellence Gala on April 30, 2018 in Dallas, TX.
“At the Maricopa Community Colleges, our mission is to provide a safe and stable environment for learning on all of our campuses,” said Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, MCCCD Chancellor. “The success of our students is top priority, but to ensure they can focus on their educational goals, we must secure the safety of our students and faculty.”
SMCC has established a Critical Incident Management Team which manages multi-hazard planning and emergency preparedness. The team coordinates all operations and preparedness activities under the guidelines of the National Incident Management System and the Maricopa Emergency Management System.
Every year, SMCC hosts a campus safety awareness event for attendees to practice proper responses to emergency situations. In partnership with Arizona State University’s Emergency Preparedness Department, SMCC has also held trainings and simulation drills. During a time when safety is critical, it is vital for schools and institutions to be implementing emergency-preparedness initiatives.
AACC is an advocacy organization that supports community colleges across the nation. The association promotes and assists institutions through recognition, learning, and leadership, economic, and workforce development.
