Chaparral Students Learn About Water Conservation

Fifth grade gifted students at Chaparral Elementary explored to conserve water through collaboration with Arizona Project WET and the Water Scene Investigation Program.

The program, run by the University of Arizona, integrates a math lesson on technological water savings with a hands-on learning opportunity for students. It is led by Project WET’s program coordinator Pamela Justice.

“Students audited a classroom sink and calculated the estimated water savings from swapping out a simple but effective piece of technology, a faucet aerator. Students were provided with two aerators and a corresponding assignment to do the same experiment at home on their bathroom and/or kitchen sinks.

Students quantified, reported, and graphically represented their water savings on the Arizona Project WET website and have contributed to the billions of gallons of water saved since Pamela Justice began this educational program,” said Chaparral teacher Tracy Carlucci.
